Demonstration of a Minimum Oxidation-reduction Potential Requirement for Trichomonas Vaginalis.

چکیده
Although Trichomonas vaginalis can use oxygen, it behaves as an anaerobic microorganism which characteristically requires a reduced oxidation-reduction potential for growth (Kupferberg et al., Ann. N.Y. Acad. Sci. 56:1006, 1953). We found that, in contrast to the usual behavior of anaerobic organisms which tolerate very low potentials (Lamanna and Mallette, Basic Bacteriology, 2nd ed., p. 481, The Williams & Wilkins Co., Baltimore, 1959), the oxidation-reduction requirement of T. vaginalis also has a lower limit, below which growth is inhibited. It is of interest

Prevalence of Trichomonas Vaginalis in Diabetic Females
Abstract Background and Objective: Trichomonas vaginalis is a pathogenic agent known worldwide and affects about 180 million annually. We aimed to investigate the prevalence of Trichomonas vaginalis in diabetic patients referred to diabetic research center. Material and Methods: In this descriptive-analytic study, 215 women referring to the Diabetic Center in Kermanshah Province were invest...
متن کاملMolecular dynamics simulations of Trichomonas vaginalis ferredoxin show a loop-cap transition.
The crystal structure of the oxidized Trichomonas vaginalis ferredoxin (Tvfd) showed a unique crevice that exposed the redox center. Here we have examined the dynamics and solvation of the active site of Tvfd using molecular dynamics simulations of both the reduced and oxidized states. The oxidized simulation stays true to the crystal form with a heavy atom root mean-squared deviation of 2 A. H...

The Identification and evaluation of Trichomonas vaginalis among women was performed over a period of three months in Ilesha. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of Trichomonas vaginalis in women in relation to different samples collected and level of education. 310 samples from high vaginal, endocervical and urethral regions of female patients were analyzed using Gram stainin...
متن کاملIn Vitro Activity of Mentha longifolia Leaves and Pimpinella anisum Seeds Against a Clinical Strain of Trichomonas Vaginalis
Trichomoniasis is one of the most common urinary-genital tract disease. The causal agent of trichomoniasis is flagellate protozoan called Trichomonas vaginalis. Metronidazole and tinidazole are the drug of choice for treatment. Carcinogenic and embryo-teratogenic effects of the mentioned drugs and resistance to metronidazole has been reported. According to cytotoxic effects of medicinal herbs i...
متن کاملAlternative pathway of metronidazole activation in Trichomonas vaginalis hydrogenosomes.
Metronidazole and related 5-nitroimidazoles are the only available drugs in the treatment of human urogenital trichomoniasis caused by the protozoan parasite Trichomonas vaginalis. The drugs are activated to cytotoxic anion radicals by their reduction within the hydrogenosomes. It has been established that electrons required for metronidazole activation are released from pyruvate by the activit...
